57 Miles, 4,983 Ft Climbing
Stage 3 is largely an out and back route with a small loop in the back country on rugged logging roads. Athletes start on Smith's Fork Road at Salt River Pass.
This course crosses paths multiple times with the Lander Cutoff where an estimated 350,000 to 400,000 settlers traveled using the Oregon Trail, California Trail and Mormon Trail while crossing the state of Wyoming. This Lander Cutoff portion of the Trail cut nearly 7 days of travel time off the journey for many adventurous Immigrants.
This stage is special to me as the actual Lander Cutoff route continues into the valley and passes right by Auburn, where my family homesteaded several generations ago.
